Michael Pfleger temporarily removed

Nice Deb covered this situation in her post “Petition to Defrock Pfather Pfreaky”. News from “Update: Michael Pfleger removed from his position at St. Sabina Catholic Church.” by Defending. Contending.

STATEMENT OF FRANCIS CARDINAL GEORGE, O.M.I.,
ARCHBISHOP OF CHICAGO
June 3, 2008

To put recent events in some perspective, I have asked Father Michael Pfleger, Pastor of St. Sabina’s Parish, to step back from his obligations there and take leave for a couple of weeks from his pastoral duties, effective today. Fr. Pfleger does not believe this to be the right step at this time. While respecting his disagreement, I have nevertheless asked him to use this opportunity to reflect on his recent statements and actions in the light of the Church’s regulations for all Catholic priests. I hope that this period will also be a time away from the public spotlight and for rest and attention to family concerns.

I hope also that the life of St. Sabina’s parish may continue in uninterrupted fashion. Fr. William Vanecko, Pastor of St. Kilian’s parish, will be temporary administrator of St. Sabina’s and will assure the full complement of ministerial services during this period. I ask the members of St. Sabina’s parish to cooperate with him and to keep him and Fr. Pfleger in their prayers. They are in mine.

I must say it’s about time someone does something about this rouge priest. Of all the priests I know, they would never talk like this priest in public or private. I’m in communion with my brothers and sisters in the faith and I feel that this priest is separatists. It saddens me to see people laughing, jumping, and clapping when a Catholic priest is talking such hate and praising pro-abortion, bigots, and race pimps. Father Pfleger is having a identity crisis. He needs to go.

He really is (or should be) an anathema to the church, and should be excommunicated forthwith. I don’t understand why the Bishop has put up with him for this long.

Thanks for the link, Muslihoon. It looks like a lot of people are signing that petition.

My recollection from my days in the midwest is thus: back around the 99-02 timeframe, his tenure at St. Sabina’s was up and a normal transfer was arranged. Just like most any other priest. His congregation and the community around his parish fought tooth and nail to keep him there. Eventually, the church caved and let him stay. If I had Lexis/Nexis, I’d search the Sun-Times or the Tribune for that article.
