Terrorist Fundraising in The United States

So, Arabs were caught with a thousand cell phones. They wanted to buy them cheap (by buying in bulk) for resale. Makes sense: sounds innocent, no? Well, it may or may not be.

Hamas, Hezbollah, and other terrorist groups raise a lot of money in The United States. Some of it is through direct donations – people donating directly to these groups. Some of it is through front groups – a group’s stated purpose is ambiguous enough that it looks harmless but really is a front for terrorists. Some of it is through outright deception – people donating money to a group that claims it’s raising money for a certain purpose when, unknown to the people or at least to many of them, it is sending the money (or part of it) to terrorists. Another way, and from what I have read this is one the major ways terrorists get money, is through terrorism-supporting business: resale, and whatnot, where the profit goes to terrorists. So although someone may be selling phones or videos or CDs or cars or electronic equipment, he could be consciously and actively aiding and abetting terrorists. Such people may be considered terrorists because they work for the group: some terrorists blow things up, some blow themselves up, some provide services needed by operatives, and some raise or transfer or move around money. This is why it is of vital importance that The United States’ government know about and monitor international (and, perhaps to a degree, even domestic) movement of money.

I am not saying these men were terrorists. They could have been, they could not have been. I don’t know. What I am saying, however, is that we need to be very cautious about anything that might be cause for concern. We cannot be too careful. And, most importantly, we must not forgot how terrorists operate in our midst. This is no cause for fear or alarm: it is cause for sagacity, discretion, and awareness.

In the age of home-grown terrorism, I would like to make you aware of what it is probably already happening here and in many other American Operating Rooms:

I sincerely hope my novel is fiction.
